Peterson Air Force Base

Peterson AFB is known as the Air Force’s most widespread and diverse wing; also known as the 21st Space Wing. The “Knights” of the 21st Space Wing operate Peterson AFB, supporting five major mission partners – North American Aerospace Defense Command, U.S. Northern Command, Air Force Space Command, Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Strategic Command and the 302nd Airlift Wing (Reserve).

Location

Peterson AFB is located in El Paso County on the east side of Colorado Springs off U.S. Highway 24 and is co-located with the Colorado Springs Airport. Colorado Springs is the second largest city in the state, and the county has a population of more than 600,000 people. The Colorado Springs area also hosts the U.S. Air Force Academy to the north, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station to the west, Fort Carson Army Post to the south, and Schriever AFB to the east.

History

On Dec. 13, 1942, the base was named Peterson Army Air Base in honor of 1st Lt. Edward J. Peterson, who was killed after the left engine on his Lockheed F-4 failed and he crashed. Peterson was the first Coloradoan to lose his life in the line of duty at the base.

Temporary Quarters

Space is extremely limited at the Temporary Lodging Facility (TLF). There are 67 one and two bedroom TLF units with fully-equipped kitchens and sleeping accommodations to support 4 to 7 individuals. Call Toll Free 1-888-AF LODGE, Ext 738, 719-556-7851 or DSN 312-834-7851 to make reservations as soon as your arrival date is known.
