History

On Aug. 24, 2005 the BRAC commission endorsed the recommendations made by the Department of Defense to close Fort Monmouth. Those recommendations became effective Nov. 9, 2005 according to the Base Realignment and Closure Act of 1990. Accordingly, Fort Monmouth will close no later than Sept. 15, 2011. The majority of the organizations and personnel positions now operating at Fort Monmouth will re-locate to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. and Fort Belvoir, Va. Currently, a departure schedule for Fort Monmouth organizations has not been established.

Fort Monmouth (pronounced mon-mith) is located in Monmouth County on the “Jersey Shore,” off of Highway 35 in Eatontown, New Jersey. The installation was originally named Camp Little Silver and was responsible for training 1st and 2nd Reserve Signal Battalions. The installation was granted permanent status and was renamed Fort Monmouth in August 1925 in honor of the soldiers of the American Revolution who died in the battle of Monmouth Court House.

Fort Monmouth is the center of gravity for the development of the Army’s Command and Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Sensors and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems. Much of the Army’s research and development of these hi-tech systems is done at Fort Monmouth by members of Team C4ISR.

Population Served

Fort Monmouth is a uniquely combined community comprised of Active Duty Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Reserve Components, retired military, DoD appropriated and Non-Appropriated Fund employees, contractors, and family members. Additionally, a great number of off-post military, reservists, veterans and a large population of retirees also draw support from Fort Monmouth.
