White Sands Missile Range is the largest rocket range military installation with over 3,200 miles of installation spreading into 5 countries in New Mexico. WSMR has teamed up with McGregor Range Complex at Fort Bliss to form a connecting bind of territory for military testing.

History
White Sands Proving Grounds was established in July 1945. It combined the existing ORDCIT Firing Ranges, the Alamogordo Bombing Range, and large tracts of both private and public lands. Even today, the range is speckled with the abandoned ranch houses and windmills of a bygone era. There are also several old abandoned silver and gold mines near the Gap Site of the Sierra Oscura. White Sands Proving Grounds was later renamed to White Sands Missile Range, or WSMR (pronounced “Whiz-Mer” by nearby residents). The range occupies a somewhat rectangular strip of land, some 40 miles wide (east-west) and 100 miles long (north-south). It is the largest military installation in the United States. This strip of New Mexico desert has been in use since the 40’s to test practically every weapon system in the U.S. military arsenal. Pioneering research in rocket technology shortly after World War II at WSMR helped propel the U.S. into space. Because of this, WSMR is sometimes known as the “Birthplace of the Race to Space”.
WSMR is the largest overland testing facility in the Department of Defense, stretching across the northern Chihuahuan Desert. At over 2.2 million acres, the terrain consists of mountains, grasslands, shrublands, alkali flats, gypsum dunes and lava flows.

White Sands Missile Range provides the DoD, Army, Navy,Air Force and other customers with high quality services for experimentation, testing, research, assessment, development, and training in support of our nation at war.

The choice of the local WSMR test sponsoring organization for your program is function of many factors. White Sands is interested in doing business with you and assisting with your mission testing requirements. - The Range has an altitude of approximately 4,000 ft Mean Sea Level (MSL).
- Maximum/mean/minimum temperatures: 75/63/50 degrees F Relative humidity: 39 percent Precipitation: 11.32 inches Snowfall: 7.8 inches Wind velocity: 7 mph with gusts to 35 mph and a record gust of 117 mph.
- WSMR is populated with over 3,000 instrumentation sites, extensive instrumentation and a data processing facility for real time and deferred test data processing.
The White Sands Missile Range Museum and Missile Park are INSIDE the military base of WSMR. To visit, you will need to get a Visitors Pass at the guard station. You will need the following:
- Vehicle Registration certificate
- A valid drivers license proving U.S. citizenship
- proof of current auto insurance coverage for your vehicle
