History

By the early 1940’s it was abundantly clear the Navy needed inland supply depots. With the advent of the “Five Ocean” Navy, overcrowded coastal Navy Yards and Depots were in need of relief. The Mechanicsburg area was one of five locations chosen for the new Depots. Close to the Pennsylvania turnpike and the railroad yards at Enola, the Pennsylvania farm land offered an ideal location.

The establishment of the Naval Supply Depot, Mechanicsburg, Pa., was authorized with the passing of Public Law No. 353 by the 77th Congress on 17 December 1941. The base was commissioned on October 1, 1942.

On July 16, 1945, the Ship’s Parts Control Center (SPCC) was commissioned under an officer-in-charge as a tenet activity of the Naval Supply Depot, Mechanicsburg. SPCC spun off the Naval Supply Depot in 1953 and became a full fledged activity with its own Commanding Officer.

The next change happened in July 1972, as the Naval Supply Depot, Mechanicsburg, was merged with the Navy Ships Parts Control Center. With 2,800 military and civilian employees, including the 600 who were transferred from NSD, SPCC was the largest activity at Mechanicsburg.

The 1990s saw some reorganization, as SPCC merged with ASO (Aviation Support Office) in Philadelphia to form the Naval Inventory Control Point (NAVICP).

In July of 1996, the Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Headquarters moved into Mechanicsburg from their leased facilities in Crystal City, Virginia. This move brought to the base the status of a Supply Corps Rear Admiral upper half and an influx of new faces at the base. The headquarters activity was now physically aligned with two of NAVSUP’s activities, NAVICP and FMSO.

In the late 1990s, the management of the base was turned over to the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic in Norfolk, Va. The base name was changed to the “Naval Support Activity”, with NAVSUP, NAVICP and FMSO as tenants.

Presently NSA Mechanicsburg serves approximately 4,300 civilian, military, and industry partners assigned to over 30 tenant activities or commands. The largest of these are: the Naval Inventory Control Point Mechanicsburg, which serves to procure, manage, and supply spare parts for submarines and ships worldwide with approximately 1,300 personnel; the Navy Supply Information Systems Activity, with approximately 800 personnel; and Naval Supply Systems Command headquarters, which has a complement of approximately 300 personnel.

Mission and Vision

The NSA Mechanicsburg mission is to provide  operationally ready, secure shore infrastructure built upon a streamlined shore installation management organization committed to quality of life to our military members and civilian staffs and quality of community developed through extensive interaction and involvement with the community. All of this will be attained within a safe and healthy working environment.
