History

Coast Guard Group/Air Station North Bend was established Sept. 28, 1974, with its first commanding officer, Cmdr. Edward F. Lewis. Before its commissioning, rescue aircraft had to be dispatched from Astoria to aid mariners off the coast. Group/Air Station North Bend has an area of responsibility which encompasses 220 miles of the Oregon coast, stretching from Pacific City, Ore., to the California border. The group is composed of six lifeboat stations, an air station, an air facility, and an aids to navigation team. The lifeboat stations are Chetco River, Umpqua River, Siuslaw River, Yaquina Bay, and Depoe Bay. The air station has five HH-65A Dolphin helicopters.

Mission

The missions of Group North Bend include maritime search and rescue, enforcement of laws and treaties, providing aids to navigation, and marine environmental protection.  In addition, the Air Station frequently assists Federal, state and county agencies by responding to calls for assistance with inland searches and medical evacuations (medevacs) of injured loggers.

Group North Bend has integrated members of the Coast Guard Reserve into every facet of the Group’s operations, and maintains an active liaison with Coast Guard Auxiliarists on the central and southern Oregon coast.

Population Served

AIRSTA North Bend houses 153 active duty, nine reserve duty and five civilian personnel.

Temporary Quarters

Group North Bend has 34 (4-two, 26-three and 4-four bedroom) government owned family housing units in the North Bend/Coos Bay area.  It is mandatory for everyone reporting to Group/Air Station North Bend to report to the North Bend to the Housing Office prior to making any off base housing arrangements (married or not married).  Those eligible for government owned housing must submit a housing application (CG-5267) and a copy of their 4170A for assignment.  The Housing Office can assist everyone by using the new Housing Set-Aside/Rental Partnership Program.  Rent in the area ranges from $450 for a one-bedroom apartment to $900 for a three/four bedroom home (estimates from 2007).  Utility costs range from $50 in the summer to $200 in the winter, depending on the type of heating source (oil or electric) (Note: Natural gas is generally not available). The Group Housing office maintains a list of potential rentals.  It is mandatory that you contact the Housing Office prior to your arrival at (541)756-9201/9258 for assistance/information.
