History

At the end of World War II, Schweinfurt’s flugplatz was renamed Conn Barracks in honor of 2LT Orville B. Conn, Jr. in 1947. Lieutenant Conn was the first World War II casualty of the Sixth Cavalry Group, killed in action on August 10, 1944, at Normandy, France. The Panzer Kaserne was renamed Ledward barracks in honor of LTC William J. Ledward. LTC Ledward was killed in action in Italy, June 1944. He was Commanding Officer of the 27th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. The U.S. Army took control of Ledward Barracks in 1948. For more information, go to the USAG Schweinfurt homepage.

Moving to USAG Schweinfurt can be an interesting but stressful experience. In order to make your transition easier please request a sponsor as soon as you receive your Orders.

The Sponsorship Program Provides information to make newcomers welcome, comfortable and aware of the base and surrounding facilities. Your sponsor will communicate with you by mail, e-mail or phone. Sponsors can arrange temporary living quarters, establish a post office box, assist in finding a house and provide information on special needs. Their goal is to make your life as stress free as possible. Deciding what to ship is usually the hardest part of moving. Your hold baggage should consist of things needed immediately. These are usually clothes, uniforms, towels and bedding. However, 90% of the relocating families do not choose to have their hold baggage delivered until they move into their house. Temporary quarters usually provide for your basic needs. If you do not hear from your sponsor within a reasonable time frame, take the initiative and e-mail or call the sponsor at the duty station.

USAREUR offers S-Gate the online sponsorship program. Register for a sponsor as soon as you are notified of the assignment. Your sponsor can help with information about your new unit and the Schweinfurt area as well as answer any questions you might have. Your sponsor can contact Relocation Assistance personnel to obtain or have a Schweinfurt Welcome book forwarded to you.

Service Members of other branches, Active Guard Reserve (AGR), Individual Reserve (IRR) and TPU Reservists should contact the gaining unit for assistance.

DOD civilians and contractors should contact your gaining Civilian Personnel Office or future supervisor for assignment of a sponsor. Note: You can also contact ACS Relocation Assistance for help in assigning of a sponsor.

Ninety days prior to your arrival date, your sponsor can contact the post office and complete DA Form 3955 to obtain a mailing address for you to begin forwarding your mail. All mail will be held for your arrival. If you are delayed in route, it is imperative that you notify your sponsor to inform the post office so that your mail will not be returned to sender.

Temporary Lodging

Single soldiers and geographic bachelors seeking on-base quarters are issued billet space by the Single Soldier Quality of Life (SSQL) NCO in their unit. Soldiers with rank E-6 and below go straight to the barracks in their unit. E-7 and above will stay in the Bradley Inn until permanent quarters become available either in the BOQ or off-post.

Married soldiers traveling with deferred travel for family members will be housed at the unit or the Bradley Inn (again, based on rank), until temporary or permanent housing becomes available. Married soldiers with concurrent family travel will be housed at the Bradley Inn, regardless of rank, until temporary or permanent housing becomes available.

Relocation Assistance

The ACS Loan Closet provides standard household items such as kitchen utensils, ironing boards, irons, strollers, and car seats on a temporary basis to incoming and outgoing soldiers, civilians, and family members. Please note that the Loan Closet does not have linens, blankets, pillows, or towels. It is advisable that you mail linens or bring some with you if you do not want to buy new ones once you arrive here.

A briefing by an Army Community Service (ACS) Relocation Readiness Program representative is part of the initial in-processing through the Central Processing Facility. All the basics are covered thoroughly including an overview of Schweinfurt’s Military Community, the location of various support services, newcomers’ class information, Army Community Service program information, and much more.
