History

Named after Major General Andrew Jackson or “Old Hickory,” the seventh president of the United States, Fort Jackson had its beginnings in 1917, as a new Army Training Center to answer America’s need for trained fighting men in World War I. Fort Jackson has always served as the Army’s pioneer in the training environment.

Mission

Fort Jackson is the largest and most active Initial Entry training Center in the U.S. Army, training 34 percent of all Soldiers and 69 percent of the women entering the Army each year. Providing the Army with trained, disciplined, motivated and physically fit warriors who espouse the Army’s core values and are focused on teamwork is the post’s primary mission. That means training in excess of 45,000 basic training and advanced individual training Soldiers every year. In addition, Fort Jackson has become a significant site of professional development for the Soldier Support Institute (SSI) including the U.S. Army Adjutant General School, Finance School, Recruiting and Retention School, the Institute’s Noncommissioned Officers Academy, and the Training Support Battalion. Also, the Army Chaplain School and the Department of Defense Polygraph Institute make their homes at Fort Jackson. Fort Jackson is also home to one of the Army’s Drill Sergeant Schools.

Population Served

In addition to the 45,000 or more Soldiers in basic and advanced individual training who pass through Fort Jackson every year, permanently assigned Soldiers total more than 3,600 with their more than 10,000 family members. Approximately 14,000 Soldiers attend courses at the SSI and other schools each year. Fort Jackson employs almost 5,200 civilians and provides services for more than 115,000 retirees and family members.

Base Transportation

Currently, there is no base transportation on this installation. However, taxicabs are authorized to transport Soldiers and Family Members on and off post.

Sponsorship

To benefit from the Fort Jackson Sponsorship Program it is essential that Soldiers formally request sponsorship by completing DA Form 5434 immediately upon receiving notification that they are being assigned to Fort Jackson. The DA Form 5434 must be filled out completely and emailed to the email address listed in the Relocation Assistance Program contact (listed in the Contacts section).  The DA Form 5434 is the “trigger” that sets motion all the support mechanisms that the Total Army Sponsorship Program can muster to help relocating personnel.

Sponsor a Spouse: Army Community Services Outreach Program will sponsor newcomer spouses. This sponsorship program answers the spouse’s questions and assist in settling-in at Fort Jackson. A sponsor can be assigned to assist spouses, if interested. To request a sponsor, send an email to the email address listed in the Relocation Assistance Program contact.

There is a Youth Sponsorship Program on Fort Jackson. Youth Sponsorship is a way to match up relocating military youth with youth already living in Columbia. Sponsors will answer their questions, send them information, give them a tour once they arrive, and assist them in making new friends.  No one knows a place better from a military youth’s perspective than one already living here. To request a youth sponsor, send an email to the email address listed in the Relocation Assistance Program contact.
