Location
United States Army Garrison (USAG) Stuttgart is located in the southwest German city of Stuttgart, the cultural and political capital of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. The city has some 600,000 people, or more than 1.5 million including the adjoining suburbs. Stuttgart is perhaps best known as the manufacturing site of Mercedes and Porsche cars. If travel is in your plans, Stuttgart’s location makes it convenient to drive or take a train to places such as, Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, or even the Netherlands which are all a day’s drive, or train ride away. Mission
It is the mission of the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart to provide facility support services and quality-of-life programs and activities to 12,500 service members, civilians, retirees and their families in our area of operation. This area encompasses the installations contained within the cities of Stuttgart, Boeblingen, Vaihingen and Mohringen. Stuttgart is a “Purple-suited” community meaning that all Armed Foreces to include the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard are supported by USAG Stuttgart. Population Served
The Stuttgart Military Community is known as a “Purple Community,” meaning that all branches of service (to include active duty, reserve and guard) are assigned here from the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy and Coast Guard. Federal civil service (NSPS), contract employees and local national hires are also part of the workforce in the community.
Base Transportation
Military Shuttle Bus
The Stuttgart military community operates a shuttle bus service to and from Patch Barracks, Kelley Barracks, Panzer Kaserne, Robinson Barracks and the Stuttgart Army Airfield. A current bus schedule will be provided at the Newcomer’s Briefing during initial inprocessing at the Central Processing Facility. The shuttle bus service is free to all DOD ID card holders.
Taxis
There are two cab systems in Stuttgart; taxis and “cars”. The taxis carry the taxi sign and the vehicles are all off-white in color. The other cab services cost a bit less, but you must always call to order them – very much like a limousine service. Tips are included in the taxi fare. You can either round off the fare to the next highest Euro for a small tip of change, or give a couple Euro if desired.
German Buses, Trolleys and Subways
The German public transportation system is excellent. The services run throughout the day and late into the night and are quite economical. The local community has numerous bus, trolley and subway lines that connect the outlying villages with downtown Stuttgart and with other villages. The connections are convenient and timely. All military installations have local transportation stops nearby. The Army Community Service Center offers a course, Culture College, which includes instruction on using German transportation.
Sponsorship
Sponsorship is a Commander’s program and official duty whereby each unit implements sponshorship as it deems while ensuring guidelines are kept according to the AR 600-8-8. The Relocation Program oversees support, training and materials. Your sponsor should be assigned to you far in advance of your arrival here. If you feel you haven’t been assigned a sponsor in a reasonable amount of time, please contact the Relocation Readiness Program at 011-49-7031-15-3436/3362, DSN 314-431-3436/3362. With confirmed orders sponsors can get an assigned P.O. Box at their incoming destination before they depart their current installation.
All other incoming Army, Air Force, Marine, Navy and Coast Guard will report for initial in-processing to the Central Processing Facility (CPF) on Panzer Kaserne, Building 2913, no later than 0830 on their second duty day in Stuttgart 011-49-7031-15-2599, DSN 314-431-2599. It is expected that the sponsor will escort the service member to the Central Processing Facility, a one-stop in-processing center.
Temporary Quarters
Your sponsor should coordinate with you regarding your temporary housing needs well in advance of your arrival. There are two on-post hotels, one on Panzer Kaserne and Kelley Barracks. All on-post hotels have designated rooms to allow pets. When there are no rooms available, referrals are made to German hotels off-post, however, a Statement of Non-Availability must be obtained first.
Relocation Assistance
The goal of the Relocation Readiness program here at USAG Stuttgart is to ensure support and assistance is available for inbound and outbound service members and civilians, as well as their family members. To this end, we provide Welcome Packets, Sponsor Packets, Culture College class, a Youth SNO class, a German Immersion Class, a Lending Closet, English as a Second Language (ESL) class, German translation services and services supporting Youth/Teen Sponsorship. Critical Installation Information
German states have passed a Dangerous Dog Ordinance (DDO), placing restrictions upon the ownership of certain types of dogs. Military and civilian personnel moving to Germany should weigh the requirements of the German DDO and owner responsibilities for dogs that fit the criteria when making a decision to bring such dogs with them. Pets do not have to be quarantined upon arrival in Germany, but a bilingual health certificate is required.
