NS Mayport

Location

Naval Station Mayport is located 15 miles east of Jacksonville, Florida, at the mouth of the St. Johns River in Duval County. Mayport is a relatively low to medium cost of living beach community area, with a rather large military presence. NS Mayport is one of three major Navy installations in the Jacksonville area. Mayport is home to a busy seaport as well as an air facility. The warm climate here makes it ideal for outdoor recreation year round, especially for boating, camping, fishing and water sports, so if you’re into water and boating, you can find out about the Newport Beach Boat Parade  and other recreation activities for you.

History

Since its commissioning in December 1942, NS Mayport has become the third largest fleet concentration area in the United States. Sailors have been flocking to the area surrounding the present site of Naval Station Mayport for more than 400 years. With its ease of access to inland waterways and the open ocean, early Sailors’ interest in the region has resulted in an important military base with strong ties to the community.

Mission

Mayport’s mission is to provide the finest service to the finest fleet. Mayport’s operational composition is unique, with a busy harbor capable of accommodating 34 ships and an 8,000-foot runway capable of handling any aircraft in the Department of Defense inventory. With more than 3,400 acres, NS Mayport is host to more than 70 tenant commands, 20 other naval ships, and six helicopter squadrons. NS Mayport is also the operational and training headquarters for the SH-60B Seahawk LAMPS MK III with a primary mission of Anti-Submarine Warfare.

Population Served

Jacksonville has nearly one million residents, and a quarter of them are affiliated with the Navy. Total active duty at NS Mayport is 15,150 with approximately 32,000 family members. DoD personnel and contractors also make up a significant portion of the workforce assigned to NS Mayport.

Base Transportation

The naval station operates two shuttle buses along a predetermined route with an average interval of 25 minutes. The average time to complete one circuit on base is 45 minutes. One bus runs the on base route continually. One bus includes off-base stops at the Navy Exchange and Commissary at specific times, otherwise it too runs the on-base route continually. An additional shuttle runs daily from the squadrons to the main Galley.

Sponsorship

When you receive orders for Mayport, you will be assigned a sponsor from your gaining unit to assist with settling into your new location. If you have not been assigned a sponsor, or have not been contacted, you may request one by contacting the commander of your new command or by going to Sponsor Assignment Aid on the Stay Navy web site.

Temporary Quarters

To ensure you and your family have a place to stay when you arrive, you should make reservations in advance at the Navy Lodge or a local motel. Please be advised temporary lodging on base is not guaranteed. There are several motels close to NS Mayport. To make a reservation at a local motel, you will need a certificate of non-availability from the Navy Lodge.

The Navy Lodge, Building 1980, located on the beach off Baltimore Street, offers 64 oceanfront rooms with two queen size beds and 24 single rooms with one queen size bed. All rooms are equipped with 27″ televisions with DVD players, microwaves, toasters, refrigerators, hair dryers and coffee makers. The Navy Lodge offers inerconnecting rooms, handicap rooms, and for animal lovers designated pet-friendly rooms. Navy Lodge Mayport is a smoke free environment. Reservations may be made by those under orders up to 90 days in advance by calling 904-247-3964 or 1-800-NAVY-INN. Be sure to include the expected arrival date. Check in is between 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Relocation Assistance

The Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) will provide support and information before and after your move through the Relocation Assistance Program (RAP). The RAP Specialist can help with general information, phone numbers, and contacts for civilian and military resources such as the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP), child care, employment, housing, immigration, food resources, and financial planning. We also maintain a lending locker, which includes kitchen supplies for your temporary use. RAP is your connection to information for the Jacksonville area, bases and communities. Critical Installation Information

Government housing at Mayport is limited. There are a total of 1,381 housing units: 681 on base and 800 off base. Of the 681 units on base, 53 are designated as senior officer housing and 100 units as junior officer/senior enlisted housing. All other housing, both on and off base, is designated for enlisted personnel.

Florida has experienced unprecedented back-to-back hurricane seasons in 2004 and 2005. Hurricanes are a fact of life in Florida, making hurricane preparedness a must for residents of the state.

Personal Property is no longer at NS Mayport. All Personal Property issues will be handled at NAS Jacksonville. Please provide your contact telephone number and disposition instructions to the Personal Property Office immediately upon arrival in the area. The Personal Property Office is located on Yorktown Ave. in the Fleet & Industrial Supply Center, Bldg. 110, or call 904-542-1000 ext 2 or 800-762-4221 ext 2. Customer hours are 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
