Location
The Washington Navy Yard is located in Washington, DC. It is in the Southeast quadrant of the city. Naval District Washington’s Headquarters is located there.
Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling is the support base for Naval District Washington (NDW) and is located three miles south of the Navy Yard in the Southwest quadrant. Personnel Support Detachment (PSD), Military and Family Support Center, Navy Family Housing Welcome Center, and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) are a few of the support agencies located on this installation.
History
The Washington Navy Yard is the oldest U.S. Navy shore facility. Founded in 1799, on land set aside by George Washington, the Navy Yard first served as a shipbuilding facility. During WWI, the Yard housed manufacturing facilities which produced various guns used in the war. Presently, the Navy Yard is home to a variety of activities. NDW functions as the military coordinator for most of the Navy units in the Washington, Northern Virginia and Maryland areas. The Navy Yard has been designated a National Historical Landmark by the National Park Service and features the Navy Museum, the homeport for Navy History.
Mission
The commandant exercises area coordination over military and civilian employees assigned to Navy activities within the geographic area encompassed by Naval District Washington. Naval District Washington is known as the “Quarterdeck of the Navy.” Commandant, Naval District Washington represents the Secretary of the Navy and the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) in a variety of matters, including public and diplomatic functions and the presentation of awards and decorations. The commandant also coordinates Navy participation in official ceremonies and serves as deputy commander for the Joint Forces Headquarters—National Capital Region (JFHQ-NCR).
Population Served
Naval District Washington encompasses over 4,000 square miles including the District of Columbia, the Maryland counties of Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s and the Northern Virginia counties of Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, King George, Loudoun, Prince William, and Stafford and the cities within their outer boundaries. Naval District Washington services active duty, retirees, and their family members along with DoD civilians and contractors. In total, NDW comprises 126 commands and activities.
Base Transportation
The Navy/DoD provide shuttle bus service for inter-base travel throughout the National Capital Region.

Sponsorship
Settling into your new location and your new unit takes time. MilitaryINSTALLATIONS and Plan My Move are designed to assist you with information about your new location. Complementing Plan My Move and MilitaryINSTALLATIONS each of the military Services has a Sponsorship Program which is very helpful in providing new unit information. If you want to learn how to be a sponsor, you can take a short training module found on MilitaryINSTALLATIONS, or if you are a Sponsor, you can use the eSponsorship Application & Training a secure website designed to train you on your sponsorship duties and provide sample materials for your use when communicating with your newcomer.
Temporary Quarters
The Gateway Inn is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Active duty, Reserve, National Guard, retirees, and DOD civilians are authorized to utilize lodging facilities on Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB). Please call 202-404-7050 for more information, to check availability and make reservations.
The Navy Lodge is located 1/2 mile away from JBAB. Public transportation (Metro Bus) is located outside the entrance gate. 50 units with air conditioning and private baths. Family accommodations. This is a nonsmoking facility. Reservations can be made via the web page, BOOK NOW, or by calling 202-563-6950, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Once you make a reservation, you cannot be bumped from your room. Reservation and room assignments are accepted on an as-received basis without regard to rank, rate or time of reservation.
Relocation Assistance
The Relocation Assistance Office is located in Bldg. 13 on Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. Contact the Relocation Office for information on Naval District Washington and the National Capitol Region. The Relocation Office also provides lending locker items such as pots and pans, dishes, silverware, futons, and small appliances for check out.
Newcomers arriving in the Washington, DC area should report to individual commands, and then area Personnel Support Detachments (PSDs). Report to the quarterdeck of your command to check in.
Critical Installation Information
All personnel are required to report directly to the command when arriving. Notify in advance, your sponsor or command if you will be arriving after normal duty hours. Unless otherwise told, report to your command’s quarterdeck.
The following is a generalization of the required materials that you should bring to PSD. PSD is located on Naval Support Acitivity-Washington, Anacostia Annex.
Service records and original endorsed transfer orders, all household goods forms, original receipts for TLE, copy of the lease you have signed for non-government housing, or acceptance letter for government housing, and “release from government quarters” form from you last housing office if required.
Update Page Two and SGLI forms. If you recently got married, divorced, or had a child, or a change in dependents, bring all supporting records to ensure your Page Two gets changed properly.
Bring in all original receipts for travel claim.
