Mission

The mission of USMEPCOM and the 65 MEPS stations is to process individuals for enlistment or induction into the armed services, based on DoD-approved peacetime and mobilization standards.

History

Fort Dix is named for Major General John Adams Dix, a veteran of the War of 1812 and the Civil War. During his distinguished public career, he was a United States Senator, Secretary of the Treasury, Minister to France and Governor of New York. Construction began in June 1917, and on July 18 the War Department named the cantonment Camp Dix. During World War I, Camp Dix was a training and staging ground for the 78th, 87th and 34th Divisions. Camp Dix grew quickly and became the largest military reservation in the Northeast. Following the armistice, the camp became a demobilization center.

Critical Installation Information

The Army is privatizing military family housing on Fort Dix under a joint Fort Dix-McGuire AFB housing privatization initiative.  All homes will be newly renovated or replaced with newly constructed homes. Privatization will provide families with access to quality homes in well-planned communities on both installations.  More than $300M is dedicated to construction and renovation during the first six years.

The costs for automobile insurance and off-base housing are extremely high in this area.

Free pre-school programs are available for children three and four years of age.
